2 Timothy 3:12

“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
Tip: highlight any word or phrase above to go deeper on exactly that.
Overview
The certainty of persecution for those who truly pursue a godly life in union with Christ.
Paul is not saying every Christian will suffer in the same way or with the same intensity, but he does state plainly that devotion to Christ inevitably brings opposition. A godly life “in Christ Jesus” cannot remain fully at peace with a world resistant to God.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
The promise is attached not merely to professing faith, but to desiring and pursuing a godly life in Christ. Paul is describing believers whose inward will is set toward holiness, not people who only bear the Christian name outwardly.
The verse does not define the kind or degree of “desire,” nor does it explain how this desire relates to outward consistency, weakness, or growth in sanctification.
This guards the verse from being read as a bare statement that every person who identifies as Christian will experience the same visible persecution. The pressure falls on a life genuinely oriented toward godliness in Christ.
Theological Insights
Godliness in Christ brings a believer into visible conflict with the values and rebellion of the world.
Faithfulness should not be measured by how little opposition it produces. A life increasingly shaped by Christ may also become increasingly costly.
Original Language
to will/desire — θέλω (the strengthened form ἐθέλω is found in Hom., and is the more frequently in Attic; see Rutherford, NPhr. , 415f.), [in LXX for חפץ ,אבה; with neg., מאן pi., etc. ;] to will, be willing, wish, desire (more frequently than βούλομαι, which see, in vernac. and late Gk., also in MGr.; for various views as to its relation to β., see Thayer, 286; but see also BL, §24, see word): absol., Rom.9:16 ,…
The word points to an active willing or desiring, not a passive association with Christianity. Paul is speaking of those whose hearts are set on living before God in a Christ-honoring way.
piously — εὐσεβῶς adv. , [in LXX: 4Ma.7:21 * ;] piously, religiously : 2Ti.3:12 , Tit.2:12 .† (AS)
This word describes life lived with reverence toward God. The verse is not about generic morality, but a Godward life shaped by holy devotion.
to pursue — διώκω [in LXX chiefly for רָדַף ;] __1. to put to flight, drive away : Mat.23:34. __2. to pursue ; __(a) of persons ; with accusative, without hostility, to follow after : Luk.17:23; with hostile purpose: Act.26:11 , Rev.12:13 . Hence, to persecute : Mat.5:10-12, 44 10:23 , Luk.11:49 21:12 , Jhn.5:16 15:20 , Act.7:52 9:4-5 22:4, 7-8 26:14-15 Rom.12:14 , 1Co.4:12 15:9 , 2Co.4:9 , Gal.1:13, 23 4:29…
The word behind “persecution” carries the idea of being pursued or pressed after. It helps show that persecution is active opposition, not merely ordinary inconvenience or the general sorrows of life.

How This Applies Today
This verse prepares believers not to be shocked when obedience to Christ creates relational, social, professional, or spiritual opposition.
- →Examine whether the desire to “live godly in Christ Jesus” is shaping choices, speech, loyalties, and compromises.
- →When opposition comes because of faithfulness to Christ, receive it as something Scripture already told the church to expect, not as a sign that God’s hand has been withdrawn.
- Do I desire godliness in Christ strongly enough to remain faithful when it becomes costly?
