“My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you;”

Overview
The beginning posture of receiving wisdom from God.
Wisdom is not gained casually. The son is called to welcome instruction and guard God’s commandments inwardly, treating them as precious treasure rather than passing advice.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
Proverbs 2 begins with a condition: wisdom’s blessings unfold for the one who receives, stores up, inclines the ear, calls out, and seeks. This is not describing human effort apart from God, but the obedient posture by which a person responds to God’s revealed wisdom.
The verse starts a conditional sentence whose outcome is not stated until later in the chapter, so the immediate verse leaves the promised result unstated.
This word makes the verse an invitation and a summons. The blessings of wisdom in the rest of Proverbs 2 are connected to a heart that actively welcomes and keeps God’s instruction.
Original Language
to take: recieve — : recieve 1) to take, get, fetch, lay hold of, seize, receive, acquire, buy, bring, marry, take a wife, snatch, take away 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to take, take in the hand 1a2) to take and carry along 1a3) to take from, take out of, take, carry away, take away 1a4) to take to or for a person, procure, get, take possession of, select, choose, take in marriage, receive, accept 1a5) to take up or upon, put up…
The verb translated “receive” suggests taking hold of the words, not merely hearing them. Wisdom begins when God’s instruction is personally embraced.
to treasure — 1) to hide, treasure, treasure or store up 1a)(Qal) 1a1) to hide, treasure, treasure up 1a2) to lie hidden, lurk 1b) (Niphal) to be hidden, be stored up 1c) (Hiphil) to hide, hide from discovery
This word gives “store up” the flavor of treasuring or hiding for safekeeping. The commandments are to be kept like valuables, not treated as information that can be forgotten.

How This Applies Today
This verse calls believers to receive God’s Word with a teachable spirit and to keep His commands inwardly, where decisions and desires are formed.
- →Approach Scripture not as casual reading, but as instruction to be received and guarded.
- →Commit specific commands of God to memory and prayer so they are “within you” when temptation or confusion comes.
- Am I merely hearing God’s words, or am I receiving them as authority over me?
- What command of God do I need to treasure more carefully in my heart right now?
