“Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you,”
Tip: highlight any word or phrase above to go deeper on exactly that.
Overview
God-given wisdom protects the inner life and guards the path of the righteous.
When wisdom enters the heart, it does not merely inform a person; it watches over them. Discretion and understanding become God’s gracious means of protection, keeping His people from foolish and destructive ways.
What Makes This Verse Confusing?
The word translated “discretion” can carry the sense of planning, intent, or careful devising. In other contexts it can describe wicked plotting, but here it is sanctified by wisdom: the ability to think ahead, weigh consequences, and refuse the path that looks appealing but leads to harm.
The underlying Hebrew word has both negative and positive uses depending on context; the English word “discretion” does not show that range.
This makes the verse stronger: wisdom does not protect only by giving moral feelings, but by forming holy foresight—God-taught judgment that sees danger before stepping into it.
Original Language
plot — 1) purpose, discretion, device, plot 1a) purpose 1b) discretion 1c) devices (evil)
This word shows that “discretion” is not mere politeness or restraint. It is the mind’s capacity to form a wise plan before acting—holy carefulness under the fear of the Lord.
to keep: guard — : guard 1) to keep, guard, observe, give heed 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to keep, have charge of 1a2) to keep, guard, keep watch and ward, protect, save life 1a2a) watch, watchman (participle) 1a3) to watch for, wait for 1a4) to watch, observe 1a5) to keep, retain, treasure up (in memory) 1a6) to keep (within bounds), restrain 1a7) to observe, celebrate, keep (sabbath or covenant or commands), perform (vow) 1…
The verb carries the idea of guarding or keeping watch. Wisdom is pictured as an active sentry over the soul, not a passive piece of advice.
to watch — 1) to guard, watch, watch over, keep 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to watch, guard, keep 1a2) to preserve, guard from dangers 1a3) to keep, observe, guard with fidelity 1a4) to guard, keep secret 1a5) to be kept close, be blockaded 1a6) watchman (participle)
This second guarding verb reinforces the promise. The verse uses parallel language to say that understanding preserves a person by continually watching over the way they walk.
